A group led by a gynecologist in Crete, Greece exploited at least 30 women, including Romanians, as surrogate mothers.
The women were kept in 14 houses where they got pregnant against their will, gave birth, and the babies were illegally put up for adoption for money. Clients included single men, infertile couples, and gay couples who wanted children.
Babies born to the surrogate mothers were sold for up to 120,000 euros each.
The women were recruited by "brokers" who received 3000-5000 euros per surrogate mother found. The brokers also got monthly bonuses to monitor the pregnant women.
The women came from countries like Romania, Ukraine, Moldova, Albania, Bulgaria and Georgia. Some were in the last weeks of pregnancy when discovered by police.
To disguise the transactions, the babies were passed off as international adoptions in countries where surrogacy was banned. In Greece surrogacy is legal but highly regulated.
The criminal group included doctors, clinic staff, a Romanian woman, and two Georgian women. Nine people have been arrested so far, with two Moldovan women wanted internationally.
I’ve come across this hilarious picture book from the late 1960s - gorgeous illustrations by Jill McDonald, utter anarchy from the five-year-old author….1/2

@jane_gatsby I had home birth with my 1st (uncomplicated- in own time, no induction incl sweeps), my 2nd in hospital via induction due to preeclampsia. I noticed huge differences in labour including much more pain and birth trauma - but it was necessary. I'd be more scared of hospital now.

Policing Minister has tonight confirmed that Chief Constables have been ordered to stop recording NCHIs following Miller v College of Policing. That is what you call effective activism. Well done everyone.
In one of the most shocking stories you could read, a London hospital has cancelled a woman's life-saving operation at the last minute because it doesn't 'share her values'. That 'value' she had was that she wanted the aftercare nurses to be female 1/12
I see the Be Kind brigade are once more hiding behind their black masks, throwing smoke bombs, screaming 'scum' at women speaking up for their sex-based rights and howling abuse at lesbians for not doing dick.

What can we learn from the death of the #Queen?
The world has watched her live through the process of #OrdinaryDying, and yet dying went unspoken, un-named.
Let's notice what nobody mentioned: we all saw the Queen going through the stages of ordinary dying.

The murder of 18-year-old Lily Sullivan by Lewis Haines has not prompted a huge amount of coverage, but the sheer casualness of this 31-year-old man's evil is terrifying. A man who killed a woman because she rejected him.
These are the words read in court from Lily's mum Anna:
