All the tributes to Julien Poulin, the Québécois actor who died Saturday at age 78, start and finish with his most celebrated role, as Bob Gratton aka Elvis Gratton. And don't get me wrong. Elvis Gratton is one of the great characters in Quebec cinema. Poulin and writer-director Pierre Falardeau changed the culture with the series of satirical films about an Elvis impersonator. Some think they're just dumb comedies – and in some ways they are – but they also work as a savage hilarious critique of colonized Canada/Quebec. His go-to phrase "Think big 'isti" entered the popular lexicon and you still hear it referenced on a regular basis. But what is just as important is the fact that Poulin was one of Canada's finest actors, with fabulous turns in the Rad-Can series Minuit la nuit and most memorably in writer-director Rafaël Ouellet's masterwork Camion. His nuanced portrayal of a trucker who falls into a terrible depression deservedly netted Poulin the best actor trophy at Quebec's film awards in 2013. A sad day.

Quelle triste nouvelle ! Avec Pierre Falardeau, Julien Poulin aura produit une œuvre coup de poing. Quand j’étais jeune et que je regardais Elvis Gratton, je riais au premier degré. C’est plus tard que j’ai compris la charge derrière cette critique sociale intelligente et profondément politique.

Julien Poulin était non seulement un grand acteur, mais aussi un grand artiste et un grand indépendantiste. Il aura marqué le Québec.
