One thing i keep noticing about us Africans in Africa is that we are incredibly gifted at storytelling, but not always at documenting our stories. We can spend hours explaining history, politics, liberation struggles, or how certain decisions shaped our countries. Our elders, former freedom fighters, politicians, diplomats, and intellectuals carry powerful experiences and deep knowledge. The problem is that too much of it remains in conversations instead of books.

You will find an American involved in a mission lasting only a few days whether military, political, or diplomatic and a few months later there is already a bestselling book, a documentary or detailed memoir explaining what happened and how decisions were made. Meanwhile, in Africa, someone who spent decades involved in liberation struggles or rebuilding a country after conflict may only share those experiences informally in university halls, interviews, weddings, funerals, or private discussions.

That is a loss, not only for history, but for future generations. Many of our young people grow up without access to firsthand African perspectives because too little is written down. In the end, outsiders often become the ones documenting our stories, interpreting our politics, and shaping how the world understands our history.

Oral tradition is part of who we are and it is something beautiful. In today’s world, speaking alone is not enough. We also need writers, historians, memoirs, policy books, archives, and recorded reflections. We need Africans to document their own experiences, ideas, victories, mistakes, and lessons.

It is time we picked up the pen more seriously. If we do not write our own stories, someone else eventually will. I hope soon Major Rwabwoni will publish his Memoir
