Today, we remember that horrible day 25 years ago when nearly 3,000 people died and our nation was forever changed. Sept. 11, 2001 is a day that will live in infamy, and like most Americans, I remember exactly where I was when I found out what was happening.

I was in my first few months serving as West Virginia's Secretary of State when our nation was attacked. The images we saw on TV were unfathomable. Before the Capitol was evacuated, I gathered my staff and we prayed for our country, and for the innocent lives that were lost and forever changed that day.

Sept. 11 wasn't just an attack on our homeland — it was an attack on our way of life. It will also stand as the day that brought our country together. It didn't matter who you were or where you were from — we stood together as one nation and showed the world that the spirit of America is unbreakable.

Today, we honor and remember the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks — including the heroes who saved so many lives — and we keep their memories alive for the next generation of Americans. We will never forget.
