Il y a 84 ans, le 16 juillet 1942, débutait la rafle du Vél d'Hiv. Organisée par les autorités françaises sur ordre des autorités allemandes, elle conduit à l'arrestation de plus de 13 000 Juifs à Paris et en région parisienne, dont 4 115 enfants.

Les familles sont d'abord regroupées dans des conditions inhumaines au Vélodrome d'Hiver, avant d'être transférées à Drancy puis déportées vers Auschwitz. La grande majorité n'en reviendra jamais.

Les enfants arrêtés lors de la rafle n'étaient pas initialement réclamés par les autorités allemandes ; leur déportation fut néanmoins décidée par le gouvernement de Vichy. 

En ce 16 juillet, nous honorons la mémoire des victimes de la rafle du Vél d'Hiv et rappelons l'importance de transmettre l’ histoire afin que jamais ne soient oubliées les conséquences de l'antisémitisme, de la haine et de l'indifférence.

A warning from Australia for Canadian leaders:

Neo-Nazis, Islamist extremists, radical leftists, conspiracy theorists, and hostile state actors like Iran may disagree on almost everything, but are united by one thing: hatred of Jews and Israel.

As Canada grapples with rising extremism and reports of Iran-backed hostile activity, this warning from Australian spy chief Mike Burgess deserves close attention. Violent antisemitism is a national security threat that demands a clear-eyed response from political leaders and law enforcement.

CIJA greatly values its partnership with the Executive Council of Australian Jewry @ECAJewry through the J7 Task Force on Antisemitism and as Australia responds to the drivers that led to the Bondi Beach terror attack, there are important lessons Canada should heed.

Today’s Toronto Police Service update should concern every Canadian. Police described a pattern in which criminals-for-hire are being recruited to carry out attacks, including shootings at synagogues and Jewish schools, with the goal of spreading fear and intimidation.

This comes at a time when extremists at home and foreign actors abroad have weaponized events in the Middle East to fuel hatred and violence against Canadians.

The perpetrators of these shootings and those directing these attacks on Canadian soil must be held accountable. This is a matter of safeguarding Canada's national security and our Canadian way of life.

Le CIJA et la Fédération CJA prennent acte du retrait de l’agenda du conseil municipal de ce soir, de la motion incendiaire, divisive et inacceptable, proposée par Projet Montréal.

Ce changement démontre avec force que la mobilisation citoyenne des derniers jours contre cette motion a porté ses fruits et que l'opposition municipale ne peut imposer impunément un agenda promu par des groupes radicaux qui vomissent les valeurs communes de notre ville et du Québec.

Malheureusement, une autre tentative de Projet Montréal est à prévoir en août. Nous invitons donc les élus municipaux à rester fermes et vigilants face à ce type de tactique irresponsable pour le vivre-ensemble dans notre métropole, et à plutôt privilégier les actions concrètes en matière de lutte contre l'insécurité et la haine - afin de s'occuper des vrais enjeux qui intéressent les Montréalais.

In today’s The @globeandmail, writer and filmmaker David Bezmozgis raises an important question: Why is the Canadian literary magazine Ex Puritan supporting “armed resistance”?

At a time when anti-Israel and antizionist hatred is driving antisemitism in Canada, it is dangerous to spread narratives that lend intellectual cover for the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7.

CIJA has reviewed the matter and while Ex-Puritan is not currently receiving public funding, we have brought this issue to the attention of relevant government decision makers.

Canadians deserve transparency and accountability when it comes to public funding. Taxpayer dollars should never be used to promote division or hatred against the Jewish community—or any community.

Jews make up just 1.5% of Winnipeg’s population, yet according to the latest @wpgpolice data, were targeted in nearly 30% of all reported hate crimes and 87% of religion-motivated hate crimes in 2025.

But as our Vice President @GustavoZentner told CBC, statistics alone cannot capture the daily reality facing Winnipeg’s Jewish community.

Protecting community members through enhanced security and holding offenders accountable are essential. But governments and authorities at every level must do far more to confront the extremists threatening not only Jewish Canadians, but also our national security and Canadian way of life.

Why the Civil Commission's Report on October 7 sexual violence matters 👇

The Civil Commission on the October 7 Crimes Against Women, Children and Families has just published the most comprehensive report to date documenting sexual and gender-based crimes committed on October 7 and during captivity.

Prepared in collaboration with the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, the report concludes that sexual violence was “systematic, widespread, and integral” to the attacks and hostage-taking, forming part of a broader pattern of atrocity crimes documented across multiple stages and locations.

The findings matter. Not only for what they document, but for what they establish: a detailed evidentiary record that moves the global conversation from questions of whether these crimes occurred to questions of accountability, consequences, and prevention.

As @IrwinCotler writes in his Foreword, atrocities begin with “the machinery of indifference, denial, and impunity. They begin with a failure to believe victims.”

Dr. @mukeshkapila describes the report as a “strongly evidenced… permanent testament” essential for accountability and historical record, "without which there is no chance to make peace."

Our Centre's role was to help ensure the findings were grounded in a rigorous legal and evidentiary framework, and situated within broader efforts to advance justice and strengthen the documentation of sexual atrocity crimes globally.
