When a file is deleted on a Windows machine, the method of recovery depends on whether the storage device is a hard disk drive (HDD) or a solid-state drive (SSD). In Windows, deleting a file usually removes its reference from the file system rather than immediately erasing the data itself.
On an HDD, the deleted file’s data typically remains on the disk until it is overwritten by new data.
To recover it, the drive should be powered off immediately to prevent overwriting, removed from the system, and imaged using a write blocker. The forensic image can then be analyzed to recover the deleted file through file system metadata such as the NTFS Master File Table or through data carving techniques.

When it comes to SSD, recovery is much more difficult because SSDs use the TRIM command and garbage collection. When a file is deleted, Windows often issues a TRIM command that causes the SSD controller to permanently erase the data blocks in the background. As a result, the actual file content is usually unrecoverable, even if the system is powered off shortly after deletion. In such cases, investigators may only be able to recover file metadata or traces of the file from system artifacts such as shadow copies, caches, or memory-related files.

Deleted files are often recoverable from HDDs if they have not been overwritten, but on SSDs, deletion commonly results in permanent data loss due to TRIM, making full recovery unlikely.
