They say that Shivaji was the architect of Maratha supremacy in the 18th century, but that is not accurate. That was the legacy of the Brahmins Peshwas appropriated.

Shivaji died after an unsuccessful final campaign. His son, Sambhaji, was defeated and executed. His other son, Rajaram, was defeated, pursued, and died while in flight.

His grandson, Shahu, along with his mother, was taken hostage and eventually submitted. The other claimant, Shivaji II, also submitted.

After Shahu's release, he professed servitude, and it was the Peshwas who expanded Maratha territory and power under their own leadership, reducing the Chhatrapati to a figurehead and confining him to Satara, where he exercised little effective military authority.

The other branch of Shivaji's family (the Kolhapur branch descended from Rajaram) was repeatedly defeated and brought to heel by the Peshwas whenever it attempted to assert its independence.
