Last week Sean Gaines, @Vicomtech spoke of the challenges Law Enforcement face when trying to adopt new technology - Sean pointed out the recognised need for high levels of engagement between research, tool developers and law enforcement - this is one of the key strengths of the EMPOWER project
We're delighted to have Sean Gaines, @Vicomtech at our final event to deliver the key note on The Challenge of Tech Adoption for Law Enforcement - real, unique challenges from budgets to cultural resistance, adoption of new technologies is a significant challenge to be overcome
The EC funded EMPOWER project has delivered to the European Commission an analysis of how recently developed AI tools for police forces comply with the EU’s AI ACT.
The EU AI Act seeks to protect European citizens from 'unacceptable' uses of artificial intelligence. For European police forces there are some bespoke rules in this ACT and allow for practices otherwise banned. EMPOWER has produced an analysis of how new developed AI tools comply with the AI Act.

The EC funded EMPOWER project is working with European police forces and AI tool providers to improve the adoption of this technology by law enforcement agencies.
After its successful tool demonstration at the Spanish Ministry of Interior’s El Pardo complex in late 2024, the EU funded EMPOWER project will demonstrate its new AI driven tools at Polícia Judiciária HQin Lisbon on May 20th.

The EC funded EMPOWER project is working with European police forces and AI tool providers to improve the adoption of this technology by law enforcement agencies.
The adoption of AI technologies by law enforcement requires an understanding of the needs of police working in real investigations. EMPOWER brings together law enforcement practitioners and AI tool providers to tests our tools in real operations.

The EC funded EMPOWER project is examining the ethical implications of the use of newly developed AI tools on the part of the European police forces.
European citizens accept the use of AI in policing where they see it as proportional. Thus, the public has a utilitarian view of the use of AI. EMPOWER is working with tools providers in this domain is assist them in building AI for end-users in the police forces across Europe.

The EC funded EMPOWER project is looking to assure the trustworthiness of AI tools adopted by law enforcement in Europe.
There is a lot of debate on trustworthy AI in Europe and further afield. What is often missing in these debates are specific case studies. EMPOWER examines how AI tools in the area of policing can be trustworthy by working with both law enforcement and AI tool developers. This is a genuine high stakes environment.

The EC funded project EMPOWER is assessing how AI driven policing tools can comply with EU’s AI Act.
The European Union’s AI Act signals an intention on the part of Brussels to be a leader in setting regulatory frameworks for the use of AI. The act impacts a variety of actors including police forces in European member states. One of the key goals of EMPOWER is to assist law enforcement in ensuring their use of AI works with this risk based framework as set out in the Act.
#AIACT, #lawenforcement
The EC funded project EMPOWER is working on ensuring the European citizens can trust the AI used in key institutions such as law enforcement agencies.
There are political differences developing in the world around the roll of out of artificial intelligence with geopolitics now part of the dynamics. The desire for less regulation of AI is in part driven by the desire for more innovation and dynamism in the sector. Policymakers would do well to factor in the use of AI in high stakes environments where trustworthiness is paramount such as policing.

A successful demonstration of AI tools by the Partners of the EMPOWER project, designed to assist European police forces in the fight against crime, terrorism including child sexual exploitation, was held at the Spanish Ministry of Interior facilities at the historic El Pardo complex near Madrid today.
The overall goal of the project is increasing the operational capabilities of Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) in fighting crime in a wide number of investigative domains.
The idea behind this event is to obtain feedback from investigative officers on the tools and demonstrate the advanced capabilities of the AI tools which can be of benefit to their future operations.
Really informative event organised by @enact_eu /@PJudiciaria on Friday. It was great to hear Dr. Nada Milisavljevic of @EUHomeAffairs comment on the need of projects to 'hear' practitioners. This collaboration and feedback loop is a core part of EMPOWER working with our two valuable Law Enforcement partners @PJudiciaria and @policia
Today is the International Day of Police Cooperation 🚔
