Dear @scotgov,
Last week I turned up at HMP Edinburgh for Mental Health Awareness Week.
Iāve worked closely with the prison service for a couple of years now and all the staff Iāve met, and worked with, have been amazing. The job they do, under very difficult circumstances, is to be admired.
However, the government need to do more. I donāt ever make political posts but Iāve seen, up close, the issues affecting our prison services and the resources are stretched to its limits.
In the past I have received a wee bit of stick for āentertainingā prisoners. Iām not there to āentertainā Iām there to tell my story and to hopefully inspire change and if my story helps one person then itās worth doing.
The mental health crisis within our prison service is massive and if we donāt deal with it then weāll continue to see re-offending which in turn means our prison services will continue to be at breaking point.
The staff are doing their bit but once the inmates are out thereās very little help for them on the outside world.
In my opinionā¦.from the many stories Iāve heardā¦..itās just not good enough and we need to do more.
Again, I want to emphasise, the staff at every prison I have worked with have been outstanding.
The staff in Edinburgh, last week, put in a mammoth effort to mark Mental Health Awareness Week, running 23 different events across the week for over 200 individuals in custody.
I was there one day and former Hibs striker Dwight Gale turned up the day after.
Thereās many people stepping up to help and itās time that @scotgov did the same. Itās not good enough.
As alwaysā¦.to the prison serviceā¦.Iām always available to pop in and help in anyway I can.
Ewen

THREAD - EDINBURGH
āSimon Community Scotland is incredibly concerned about the recent rise in demand from people at risk of and experiencing rough sleeping in Edinburgh. We have seen a 300% increase in the number of people in desperate need of help and a safe place to sleep.
Glasgow rough sleepers - count and report
https://t.co/oncGmMZxou
Between midnight and 3am this morning, staff and 23 volunteers from a variety of partnerships took part in our latest rough sleepers count. During the course of the count we identified 27 people rough sleeping.
Sunndach #volunteer Karen was busy at the weekend making some fabulous snowmen for Sunndach's winter corridor. The Sunndach volunteers have been amazing, they have all built up greats bonds with the children at Sunndach, as well as the staff. #nhsvolunteers#meaningfulactivity
