The attempt to sabotage a photographer’s chances ended up creating the most memorable image of his career.

Everyone at the regional zoo photography competition knew he was the favorite. Year after year, his elephant photographs stood out, and he had earned a reputation for being one of the friendliest people there, always gracious even when others hoped someone else would finally take the top prize.

So when a zoo insider quietly helped a competing friend, they thought they had found the perfect way to stop him. He was assigned the worst elephant viewing slot of the day, a time when the elephants were usually resting and inactive. Since his winning images often showcased their strength, movement, and personality, it seemed like a guaranteed disadvantage. He realized exactly what was happening, but instead of arguing or complaining, he simply picked up his camera and headed in as if nothing had changed.

When he arrived, he found an elephant peacefully resting among a pile of old tires, completely still, with a small butterfly perched on its trunk. Rather than trying to force a dramatic shot, he patiently waited. Moments later, the elephant opened its eyes and awkwardly crossed them to look at the butterfly sitting inches from its face.

The result was one of the funniest and most unexpected wildlife photographs anyone at the event had ever seen. 😂

The image went on to win the competition and quickly spread far beyond it, becoming a reminder that sometimes the obstacle meant to hold you back ends up leading directly to your greatest opportunity.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is world-renowned for its rigorous engineering and science programs, but it also harbors a delightfully eccentric campus tradition: the official "Pirate Certificate."

To earn this swashbuckling credential, students must complete four specific physical education courses: sailing, fencing, archery, and pistol or rifle shooting. While it doesn’t grant legal authority to plunder on the high seas, the certificate is officially printed on high-quality parchment paper by the MIT Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation (DAPER), adding a whimsical achievement to an otherwise intense academic workload.

The tradition stems from MIT's unique undergraduate graduation requirement, which mandates that all students complete a specific number of physical education credits alongside a swim test. Recognizing the perfect overlap of these traditional combat and navigation courses, creative students realized they possessed the foundational skill set of a 17th-century privateer.

The university fully embraced the joke in 2011, establishing an official, lighthearted ceremony where newly minted "pirates" swear a tongue-in-cheek oath to the university, often dressing up in eyepatches, tricorn hats, and plastic cutlasses to celebrate their graduation from the program.

Beyond the fun and games, the Pirate Certificate serves a practical purpose on campus by successfully gamifying physical education and motivating busy, stressed students to stay active. It has become a highly sought-after resume builder and a badge of honor, so much so that the required classes, particularly sailing on the Charles River and archery, are notoriously difficult to register for because they fill up almost instantly. The program has even inspired similar unofficial "credentials" at other universities, but MIT remains the undisputed pioneer of turning standard gym credits into a legendary, viral campus rite of passage.

The historical relationship between religion and pastry making is based on literal visual storytelling. Centuries ago when most people could not read the church used specific food shapes as a powerful marketing tool to teach the lives of saints.

Bakers acted as the structural architects of these narratives transforming dough into literal symbols. Today is the feast of Saint Honore the patron saint of bakers whose cake uses rings of choux pastry to physically construct a crown.

Other regional traditions are far more direct. In Italy the Minne di Sant Agata uses a dome of rigid white icing and a red cherry to visually recreate the anatomy of a martyr. In the United Kingdom Cattern cakes are rolled into tight structural spirals to directly mimic the mechanical breaking wheel of Saint Catherine.

It was the ultimate media strategy where historical stories were literally consumed.
