@DreyfusJames I would feel very uncomfortable too. I think I would say 'excuse me', get out of that seat, and go and sit right near the driver, and put my bag on the other seat nest to me so he can't sit there.

@OSacrumCorIesu I believe some chapters of that book are describing a play: a dramatic enactment to bring home to the people the seriousness of their turning away from God. If you imagine it performed, with gasps and muttering from the crowd, it makes sense.
