FGM occurs in a variety of cultural contexts, with significant differences in terms of the age at cutting, the extent of cutting, the setting in which the practice takes place and the rituals associated with it.

These effects include severe pain, shock, infections and complications during childbirth (affecting both the mother and the child), long-term gynaecological problems (such as fistula), psychological effects, and death.

Whichever the case, it is important to keep on strengthening the gains from FGM/C interventions so as to persuade more people to change of their own free will. This would lead to sustainable abandonment of FGM/C.
Of the 2 instances, one group now believes (altered belief system) while the other still does not believe but are nevertheless deterred; for fear of consequences as result of existence of the law.
Actively and deliberately engaging those of the opposite sex, on the issues and consequences surrounding the practice of FGM/C, is among others, key to strengthening consensus on its abandonment.
According to a UNICEF report on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting, in Nigeria, 35% of boys and men and 31% of girls and women surveyed, reported that they do not know what the opposite sex thinks about FGM/C.
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a harmful traditional practice (HTP) which should be discouraged in the interest of the sexual & reproductive health of women and young girls. Let's support its abandonment.
