"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X
Tax payer’s money should not be wasted on advertising material to sell the idea of a new Surrey police force If we were going to spend money, it should have been on real community engagement not a sales pitch with no substance. https://t.co/XL0I6XOc88
Due to the moral panic around gang violence there’s a perception of Surrey being a “dangerous” city and certain groups (South Asian males) are vilified within the community
Statistics Canada & Macleans show that Surrey is not even part of Canada’s top 20 most dangerous places to live & is ranked at 164! Cities such as West Vancouver (57), White Rock (89), and Langley (141) are ranked much higher than Surrey!
“Sometimes we as members of society we only respond to the symptoms but we don’t ever look at the root causes of what causes individuals to become what they are.” #PowerOfUs
“Typical media, twisting the problem into their own narrative” said one comment. Another commented, “Propaganda to defame South Asian kids.” 👏🏽👏🏽 #MoralPanic#FolkDevils#MediaAmplification
