Join us to stop cuts to public services, wages, pensions and social protection across the world. There are alternatives that can ensure a people’s recovery.
#Austerity measures reduce approval, drive protests, and raise the odds of a government crisis, says a new study on the political impact of an economic recipe.

IMF imposes regressive taxes in Moldova.
Under a new agreement with the IMF, the government committed itself to reduce its deficit by regressive policies such as “broadening the VAT”, wage reform and “simplifying” (probably meaning reducing) income taxes.

#Argentina’s long & turbulent history with @IMFNews is a clear example of how #debt burden can undermine sovereignty. For Aylén, the #RealCostOfDebt is the heavy repression she & her community face fighting for their right to live on their ancestral lands 👇
Session concluded | Pre-AFSD 2026 – Session 3
Today’s session on “Reclaiming Economic Justice” brought forward critical discussions on the structural drivers of multidimensional inequalities in the Arab region and the urgent need to rethink prevailing economic models.
Speakers highlighted how austerity policies, corruption and illicit financial flows, unequal economic structures, and the invisibility of care work continue to deepen inequalities and limit pathways toward equitable development. The discussion emphasized the importance of shifting toward rights-based, inclusive, and locally driven economic frameworks that challenge dominant growth paradigms and prioritize social justice.
We extend our sincere thanks to our speakers and moderator for this rich discussion:
@RBissio (End Austerity Campaign Coordinator)
Katherine Wilkins (Transparency International)
Bryony Steyn (UNESCWA)
@LinaAH1 (The Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship)

Austerity is good...
#Austerity is a virtue that all civilizations have praised. But the "austerity policies" endorsed by the #WorldBank and the #IMF actually ressemble what the classic Greek called "hybris" the humilliating crime of arrogant excess.

🚨 The “austerity trap” is real.
1) Global South countries are trapped in debt cycles. To repay, they’re pushed to expand fossil fuel extraction - deepening climate breakdown
