Statement by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on the Passing of Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis of #Ethiopia.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has received with profound sorrow the news of the passing of Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis, a distinguished diplomat, a pioneering figure in Ethiopia’s foreign service, and a steadfast Pan-Africanist who dedicated her life to the service of her country and the continent.

Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis built an exemplary career that spanned several decades. As one of Ethiopia’s earliest female ambassadors, she helped pave the way for generations of African women in diplomacy. Her service reflected her unwavering commitment to advancing Africa's interests and strengthening international cooperation, where she played a vital role in promoting the continent’s collective priorities. The Chairperson noted, “Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis embodied the highest ideals of African diplomacy, marked by integrity, excellence, and an unyielding commitment to our shared future.” He further emphasised that “her legacy will continue to inspire generations of African diplomats, particularly women, to serve with courage, distinction, and purpose.”

On behalf of the African Union Commission, the Chairperson @ymahmoudali extends his deepest condolences to the family of Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis, to the Government and people of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and to all Africans who mourn this great loss.

May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Ambassador Konjit was a prominent woman in the diplomatic world, representing Ethiopia with exceptional dedication. Her legacy will continue to inspire. Ambassador Konjit's career included significant time in the United States. She served at the Ethiopian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York and was a recipient of the prestigious Carnegie Fellowship at Columbia University in New York in 1963, where she deepened her expertise and built lasting connections between our two nations. #US_Ethiopia

“Adwa was a defining affirmation of African sovereignty, dignity, and unity,” the Chairperson @ymahmoudali stated. “It sent a powerful message that Africa would determine its own destiny.”

He emphasized that the spirit of Adwa continues to inspire the continent’s aspirations under Agenda 2063. “As we confront today’s challenges, we must remain united. Africa’s strength lies in its solidarity.”

Ending the HIV/AIDS as a public health threat advances #SDG3 and other #SDGs, like 4, 5 and 10. At the @UNAIDS High-level Event Celebrating HIV Progress to End AIDS and Advance the SDGs, @Winnie_Byanyima reminded us that there are 9 million people who are not on HIV treatment. This is a threat to health, development and security. We've made remarkable progress in ending HIV/AIDS as a public health threat, but we have more work to do. Working with our partners, through @PEPFAR, we can achieve our shared goal to end the HIV/AIDS pandemic by 2030.

CDC is tracking a new lineage of the virus that causes COVID-19. This lineage is named BA.2.86, and has been detected in the United States, Denmark and Israel. CDC is gathering more information and will share more about this lineage as we learn it.
