Celebrating My Eldest Brother at 75

Today, 30th August 2026, I celebrate my eldest brother, Dominic Ositadimma Obi, who turns 75. I celebrate him not merely because he is my elder brother or because of his age, but because he is an exemplary human being.

When I was Governor of Anambra State for eight years, he never came to my office or the Governor’s Lodge for a day seeking favours, as many might have expected. He is a planner and contractor who builds homes for people, yet not once did he ask me for a government contract.

Whenever we met, he would warmly embrace me and tell me that he was fine. He would then solemnly remind me to keep doing what I promised the people and never bring a bad name to the family and my community. He would tell me that whatever difficulties he was going through, many others were worse off, and that I should do my best for society.

I later came to understand that this was not peculiar to him alone. My family members had actually held a meeting and resolved that none of them would take advantage of my position as Governor. They decided that whatever good name I was building for the Obi family and Agulu must be protected. The same principle extended to my children.

Today, at 75, my beloved brother remains deeply concerned about Nigeria. Whenever we speak, he is full of prayers and good wishes. He constantly reminds me that if I have the opportunity to serve Nigeria, I should do so with honesty, integrity, and the interest of the people at heart.

Brother Dom, I thank God for the gift of your life and for the example you have set for our family. Your integrity, humility, contentment, and sense of responsibility are qualities worthy of celebration.

May God Almighty, who has graciously been with you all these years, grant you good health, His abundant grace, and blessings.

By Making Excuses for Unverified Certificates, We Are Planting Poison in the Soul of Our Society

A nation that tolerates unverified academic credentials at any level of leadership, regardless of who is involved, risks destroying the very standards upon which a society is built. The issue is not about an individual. It is about standards, accountability, and the values we choose to pass on to the next generation.

We cannot continue to excuse blurred, missing, questionable, or unverified credentials simply because they belong to someone we support. The process through which people attain positions of responsibility matters greatly. How we get into leadership is as important as what we do with leadership.

If we normalise the abandonment of basic verification today, tomorrow we may have professors who never attended a university, doctors who never studied medicine, and judges who never studied law.

That is the dangerous precedent we must never allow. Nigeria cannot sacrifice its future on the altar of today's transactional politics. We must build a society where truth is not partisan, standards are not negotiable, and accountability applies equally to everyone.

History will judge us not only by those we defended, but by the principles we were willing to defend. We must choose truth over convenience, standards over sentiments, and the future over political expediency.

A New Nigeria is possible, but only if we are willing to do the right thing, even when it is inconvenient. -PO

The Difference Between Dangote And Fada Oluoma.

I read that a new research has shown that the top wealthiest 25% of Americans aren't better off than the poorest citizens in Europe. In other words, Europe's poorest citizens live as long as America's richest citizens. The excess money America's richest have doesn't buy them extra years. I'm most definitely sure it doesn't buy them extra happiness, joy and fulfillment more than the poorest dudes in Europe. It does buy them extra pleasures and things to indulge in, but not extra LIFE.

How do we explain this? The research says Europe's public health schemes or systems and other structures of social services are responsible. America's Healthcare system is broken and health care is expensive there.

Still, going by the logic of wealth, this broken Healthcare and other public systems should affect only the poor, it shouldn't be a problem to the wealthy who can afford any health care. In America, reality cancels that logic. It does affect them.

There is also a phenomenon called the "inverted U Curve" described in Malcolm Gladwell's David and Goliath book that we can probably use to explain this. Lack of money or shortage of it has negative effect on your health or happiness. A certain amount will give you the maximum results of good health. Beyond that level, more money leads to depreciation or what you call diminishing return.

As e be now, e fit be say Dangote is not happier than me, according to this theory. If he is, it is not because of his excess wealth. This statement is even making me feel like 🫩🫩.
Guys, but that is the truth. It is proven. What needs to be solved is why a Fada Oluoma would still prefer to have a Dangote's wealth despite the fact that not having it doesn't make him less happier. That question becomes existential and essential in places like Europe.

Worse still are those who are killing, robbing, duping and impoverishing millions of others just to have more than they need, more than is necessary. How do politicians and greedy religious leaders not get this? Wealth can actually become a burden or curse to an individual in this respect.

For decades, the Scandinavian countries have topped the chart as the happiest countries of the world. They don't boast of global billionaires as you would find in the USA and other first world countries. They are not among the superpowers militarily. They are just a bunch of comfortable and well run countries with strong social institutions of welfare for their citizens.

A country that makes it's citizens see the acquisition of stupendous wealth as the guarantee for good, long and healthy life is closer to the Hobbesian state of nature than it is to modern civilization.

When a country is well run, having wealth or excess money becomes an opportunity than a necessity. The difference between Dangote and Fada Oluoma in such a country will be just wealth and excess money, not health, not safety, not longevity, not shelter, not comfort.

This is why GOVERNMENT makes all the difference. Can't we just hire some Europeans to govern Nigeria for 10 years? We draw a contract and pay them same way we pay foreign coaches. We save ourselves the stress and cost of elections for 10 years. Wetin else I wan talk na, make we just reason am small.

Britain colonised us but we went and adopted American presidential system that is ANNOYINGLY expensive and wasteful without necessarily delivering productive governance. Have you ever heard of election rigging, violence or vote buying in the UK?
