I joined global leaders, policymakers, investors and industry captains at the official opening ceremony of Africa’s premier mining conference, Mining Indaba 2026, in Cape Town, South Africa.
The discussions underscored Africa’s immense mineral potential as a catalyst for economic transformation, with a strong call for value addition, regional collaboration, improved safety standards and people-centred mining that delivers tangible benefits to local communities.
Kenya remains firmly aligned with these continental aspirations, advancing reforms that promote responsible mining, local content, investment certainty and sustainable development across the sector.
I was accompanied by the Principal Secretary for Mining, Mr. Harry Kimtai, the Kenyan High Commissioner to South Africa, H.E. Jane Ndurumo, and senior officials from the Ministry as we showcased Kenya’s commitment to positioning itself as a competitive and trusted mining destination in Africa.

At a consultative meeting with the leadership of Kwale County regarding the Mrima Hill Strategic Minerals project, I outlined the process that will be followed until the award of mineral rights for the exploration and mining of these strategic minerals.
Mrima Hill is of national strategic importance, hosting minerals that are critical for modern infrastructure and energy transition.
Our obligation as the national government is to ensure that these resources are extracted safely, transparently and sustainably for the long-term prosperity of Kwale and the country as a whole.
My assurance to the Kwale leadership is that the Ministry is committed to transparency and accountability throughout the project's development process. Mrima Hill will be the first mining project in Kenya to be subjected to an open and competitive tendering process, setting a new benchmark for accountability in the sector.

Accompanying me at the meeting were senior officials from the State Department for Mining, led by Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai.
