"Hey Anthropic I'm a developer from Somalia.
Our community โ developers, students, young people who want to build with AI โ we can't access Claude.
Not because we don't want to. Not because we're not ready. Just because of where we're from.
We're learning. We're building. We're motivated.
We just don't have access to the tools.
Please Anthropic โ enable Claude for Somalia."

Timeline: General Aydidโs injury and death
Given the interview conducted by journalist Hassan Barise, which contains inaccuracies, I was approached by multiple people to weigh in. I will not go into the history of the civil war because other people have already commented on it, but I want to correct the timeline of Gen. Mohamed Farah Aydidโs injury and death.
As the BBC reporter in Mogadishu at the time, I interviewed Gen. Aydid on July 4, 1996. This was the result of about six months of effort. I was assisted in getting the interview by one of his advisors, Prof. Mohamed Farah Jimale (AUN)- who is among the first politicians to oppose the government of Mohamed Siyad Barre (AUN); and has a long, high-profile history with rebel groups that toppled the military government.
My interview with Gen. Aydid was a lengthy - about 54 minutes, covering a wide range of topics. The interview was aired by the BBC the following week (on July 11, if I recall correctly). This interview is in the BBC archives; those who wish to reference it can request it from the BBC.
On July 24, 1996, Gen. Aydid was wounded in a heavy fighting on the southern side of the former U.S. embassy (Wadajir side). His family, close aides, and advisors decided not to make the injury public.
On July 25, 1996, Ali Mahdiโs radio, quoting security sources, announced that Gen. Aydid had sustained a serious injury in the previous dayโs fighting. It was the first station to report his injury.
On July 28, a recorded audio message from Gen. Aydid was aired by his radio station, in which he insisted he was โsafe and sound,โ and said, โIโll die only when my day comes.โ I did not interview Gen. Aydid while he was injured as claimed by Hassan Barise. (This audio should be available in Radio Mogadishuโs archives today; I hope they will make it available to historians.)
On August 1, 1996, Gen. Aydid died from the gunshot wound (AUN). The next morning, at 6:30 a.m., his radio station announced his death, attributing it to a โheart attack.โ He was buried the same day at a cemetery near SOS Hospital, in Huriwaa district.
Not only is Alshabab a problem in Somalia, but so are doctors whose qualifications we donโt know, "businessmen" who import expired medicines and food, for-profit clinics that just care about money, not their patients; all of these are issues we must address before it is too late!
Aqoontu waxay goโaamisaa waxaad oran lahayd, xirfadduna sidaaad u oran lahayd, anshaxuna inta aad ka oran lahayd, xikmadduna in aad orato iyo in kale, laakiin in lagaa rumaysto iyo in kale waxaa goโaamiya hufnaan iyo daacadnimo.
Waxaan la damqanayaa danyarta barakacayaasha ah ee lagu dul iibiyey dhulkii Jaamacadaha. Dadka ku barakacay dalka gudihiisa (Internal Displaced People) xuquuq dib u dejin ee heer qaran iyo mid caalami ah ayey leeyihiin. Ma mudnayn in ciidan iyo cagafcagaf laga adeejiyo.
Waxaa hubaal ah in lala xisaabtami doono madaxda dhulka danta guud xaraashaysa ee danyarta barakicinaya, kuwa dalaalaya, iyo iibsanaya intaba. Waxaan u digaynaa dadka hantidooda gelinaya dhul dowladeed oo berri sharcigu soo celin doono.
Tonight, I have released my memoir, titled "Adkaysi (Resilience)". This book delves into my personal journey, discussing the principles that have influenced and shaped my perspective on life and the world. It chronicles my extensive involvement in politics, Islamic and national movements, as well as transitional governments of Somalia. Furthermore, it explores the complexities of the post-transition period and navigating the intricate dynamics of politics driven by clan, religion, and regionalism.
Additionally, it shares my experiences of living in different countries, encountering diverse communities , and facing numerous challenges, events, and decisions. My hope is that this memoir proves valuable and insightful to its readers.
