In 2006 the FBI hired Craig Monteilh, a convicted forger, to pose as a Muslim convert at mosques in Southern California and paid him about 177,000 dollars over the assignment.

For some fifteen months he attended prayers at the Islamic Center of Irvine, recorded conversations, gathered names, numbers and email addresses, and used hidden devices while steering talk toward extremism.

Congregants found his manner alarming, obtained a restraining order, and reported him to the FBI as a possible danger.

5 months undercover. About $177,000 in payments. One mosque under surveillance. And one incredible twist: the people being watched were the ones who reported the informant.
