It was an experiment to see if AI could develop human like qualities if it developed from the bottom up rather than top down. This virtual world was also designed to operate like a video game and those who could use that knowledge (hax) were seen as some divine force.

This idea has also been explored along side sentient AI in the anime Sword Art Online. Very interesting to see what becomes of all this. In Sword Art Online: Alicization, the characters interface with AI that were raised in a world that was just as real as the outside.

Whats actually going to happen is there will be one giant metaverse with all these inside it. You will move between them like the levels/planets in Ready Player 1.
