America’s first 3 central banks collapsed.
The Fed survived—but it violates its own mandate every single day.
Human institutions persist, but not always by following their own rules.
Would we be better off with "stable prices" than low, steady inflation?
The Federal Reserve is explicitly violating the law every single day with regards to its inflation goals. Before we get to that punch line, some history. 🧵
Here’s the problem:
The law says stable prices.
The Fed targets 2% inflation.
That’s not “stable”—it’s steady erosion.
But The Federal Reserve Act does not specify a penalty for violating the law, so nothing happens.

My view of morality, geopolitically and historically, comes from a utilitarian lens: maximize human happiness, minimize suffering.
From this perspective, some cultures have generated systems, such as plumbing, vaccines, fertilizers, electrification, that lifted billions out of misery. The diffusion of these innovations wasn’t “cultural dominance” but optimization of human well-being at scale.
