Don’t equate removing statues with burning at the stake. It’s not a reasonable comparison. And plays to the racists.

I don’t think so. We should judge ourselves harshly and hope we’re doing the best for the future and making amends for our past

It’s a historical discussion about the morality of the 17th century, but now isn’t the time to have it. And actually, condemning it DOES make us morally superior. I’m surprised you don’t think so.

Just because some people thought it was right, or it was common, doesn���t excuse it. Right?

Cultural changes in small issues, fine, but to say that they didn’t know that persecution, genocide and murder were wrong? I’m not so sure. And regardless, we should condemn those acts.

And previously, those that objected to atrocities either didn’t know about them or were suppressed. It’s about power. We have a more open platform now, so we can express outrage. Morality hasn’t changed.

So of course we look at them and judge the people who perpetrated these acts, but people then did too, and were silenced. The act remains the same, of course

@xandvt “If you’ll refer to the chart you will see here, on this graph, that racism only began to be morally wrong 1969, and only in certain situations, like talking to one of them. My slide “Behind closed doors” shows that people didn’t know racism in the home was wrong til 2012...”
