@mpweiher@GobiWueste Wieso?
(France Info)
Oceanic Uranium
The Earth is 0.00028% uranium (2.8ppm), which is about 80 trillion tons of the stuff. The planet Earth contains 10,000 tons of uranium for every human.
The problem is that all of this uranium is littered throughout the crust. So how do you get it?
We it turns out, that uranium will leach out of the Earth’s crust and dissolve into the ocean until it reaches a chemical equilibrium at 3.3 parts per billion.
As the Earth is 4.5 billion years old, and it’s surface is 71% ocean, this means that this process has been running for a long time and the uranium content of the world’s oceans is indeed 3.3 ppb.
This means that as fast as you extract uranium from the world’s ocean, more uranium will immediately leach into the ocean and replenish it.
The Earth’s oceans contain 4.5 billion tonnes of uranium, that’s 560kg of uranium per capita, and as we extract it there is 10,000,000kg of uranium per capita in the Earth’s crust to replace it.
So how do you extract uranium from seawater?
You use a Sulfonic Covalent Organic Framework (SCOF), which was recently found to extract 31.5mg/g per day, whilst uptake of iron, cooper, zinc and vanadium was extremely low (a good thing).
31.5mg/g means that SCOF forms a polymer that is 3.1% uranium after 1 day in seawater.
That’s ridiculously fast extraction.
So the question then becomes how can we manufacture SCOF and how can we commercialise and scale the manufacture of SCOF?
Uranium is currently $185/kg
SCOF costs about $20-40 to produce at scale,l (let’s call it $30/kg).
$30/kg / 0.031 kgU = $968 cost per kg of U extracted… this is about 5x the uranium cost.
HOWEVER, SCOF is reusable, you can regenerate it and use it again.
After 5 cycles, you break even with $180 uranium, after 50 cycles you are producing uranium at 10% of today’s market price.
The Earth has unimaginable resources of uranium, it is extractable, it is burnable.
Interesting times.
Moore's Law stört also an prinzipielle Grenzen, zumindest bei klassisch implementierten Chips

A FORMER WHITE HOUSE MARITIME LEAD AND A 15-YEAR TERRAPOWER VETERAN ARE PUTTING NUCLEAR POWER ON CIVILIAN SHIPS
OCEAN ATOMICS
· Ocean Atomics is an American company designing, licensing, and assembling a standardized nuclear electric power plant for maritime applications, installable on any vessel built to its nuclear-ready standards, with end-to-end sustainment planned through a dedicated nuclear lifecycle dockyard.
· The company is building around compact, proven systems enabled by water-cooled reactors, a choice it ties directly to moving fast and leading the creation of this new market.
· Leadership pairs the two pedigrees this market demands: CEO Will Cahill served as White House maritime lead on the National Security Council after a 20-year Coast Guard career, and Chief Nuclear Officer Dr. Nick Touran @whatisnuclear spent 15 years in advanced reactor development at TerraPower.
· Job postings sketch the near-term roadmap: a Test and Training Platform as the lead vessel, marine-to-shore grid synchronization for delivering power to onshore utility grids, a reactor engineering team in Bethesda, Maryland, and design packages built to clear classification society, flag state, and NRC-facing reviews.
OE READ: This is not a reactor startup, it is a market architecture play: one standardized plant, nuclear-ready vessel standards any shipyard can build to, a lifecycle dockyard for sustainment, and operator development under one roof. Betting on water-cooled systems reads as a licensing and schedule decision, trading exotic performance for over six decades of operating precedent at sea when facing class societies, flag states, and the NRC. If the standards catch on, Ocean Atomics looks less like a shipbuilder and more like the rule-setter for a market that does not yet exist.
What proves out first at sea, floating power delivered to shore or nuclear propulsion?
