The pilot completely rejected the idea of calling himself a hero. He said that, in those moments, he simply understood that if he did not open the door, it was over. Deep down, he hoped he would manage to open it and that someone would help. He made a remarkable remark: “He had one last fight left in him.”

Ambassador Yossi Shelley told the pilot that he had now entered the pantheon of global heroes: “You did something incredibly brave against all odds.”

At the end of the conversation, Shelley formally invited him to visit Israel as soon as he is able, so that he can receive the embrace and love that the entire country wants to give him.
