It seems @entomolojosh has rubbed off on me, I've reared my first ever moth to adulthood, this very fancy looking Scarlet Tiger (Callimorpha dominula). It was a really interesting process to watch, and I'll definitely keep an eye out for more caterpillars.
It was great to get involved, and hopefully next year will be even better. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to seeing what we've caught in the pitfall traps, it's looking like there's some real variety in them.
A great sampling session with @benclunie today - highlights being these caterpillars. I'm thinking Green Brindled Crescent for the brown (from Hawthorn bush), and Winter Moth for the green (from various broadleaved trees), @rlewington2?
@jcasperd@entomolojosh Looks like a moth caterpillar to me, possibly a noctuid, but I'm no expert. I defer to @entomolojosh, he's much better at lepidoptera than me.
Today some friends & I went to Wenlock Edge (as recommended by @simonsegar!), & we had a great time collecting #fossils, most of which were crinoid stems & various bivalves and brachiopods. I collected two heavy ones (>20kg each!), so I might regret that in the morning...
It was amazing to participate in the #BUC2024 on behalf of @HarperAdamsUni. I'm glad our entomology knowledge helped us pass this round, and we're all looking forward to next week. Thanks to @BUCBotany for organising such a great event.
On Wednesday some friends and I (@Entomatthew, @wildmaude, @LucyCostick and others) will be going against 27 other teams in the Botanical University Challenge as the Harper Hemlocks! Please wish us all luck!

It was a great day out, with some fascinating talks, including from @flygirlNHM and @scienceheather , as well as an opportunity to do some networking. Thanks to everyone who helped organise such an amazing event.
I had a wonderful day yesterday at the @FieldStudiesC Shropshire Entomology Day and it was fantastic to have a mix of our undergrad and postgrad #ento students from @HarperAdamsUni attending.
This was a super fun and informative day, and it was great to go for a second year! Some amazing talks from everyone, and great to meet inspiring entomologists such as @flygirlNHM!
Proud of our invested @HarperAdamsUni students for their significant contributions (and presentations) to the Environmental Sustainability Conference; and a huge thank you also to our academics who have supported the Land & Soil group over the last year. @dr_andy_wilcox
Great first term with the @HarperAdamsUni 2nd yr BSc zoologists (applied, entomology & EM). Significant inroads being made into securing quality industry placements & assignment completion. Well done all: Happy Christmas! 🎄 @DrJohnReade@Dr_Joe_Roberts@benclunie@DrElliephants
Site 2 for harvest mouse surveying, tussocks of grass surrounding wetland. @HarperAdamsUni students are busy on task. I am completely distracted by teal, widgeon, fieldfare and redwing and lots of wrens in the riparian zone of the Strine Brook.@BTO_Shropshire@ShropsWildlife
Insects at the ready!
It's been another fun day at #BigBangFair@necbirmingham with the team for #InsectWeek23
If you're there too, why not come along & chat with us? None of us bite 🪲🪳🐝
