Lest you forget. Community is not given to you. You must build community. You must contribute to community, and when others also contribute then your community will thrive. The benefits of community emerge from collective action.
@about_dave I will dip back into the wannabe dictator platform for just a sec to lol at this comment. I didn't realize multi-million dollar homes that block beach access qualify as affordable housing. Sorry i missed all the affordable beachfront housing up and down the CA coast.
The bill would “set a political precedent,” said @EnvPolicyCenter. “I don’t think it’s a good strategy to try to erode [laws] that have statewide benefit for the very narrow local benefits for the housing development process.”

On Day 1, 198 nations ratified the framework for making COP27's loss + damage fund operational, and the first pledges were made. The EU led with $245M, while the US pledged $17.5M or about 0.002% of its defense budget.

@Debkrol It will take some time for people to migrate. It is a classic coordination problem. But I just can't deal with the fascist owner of Twitter anymore
Really interesting and important study here. Yet again, local rulemaking authority and having a formal community management authority are associated with better forest outcomes across a range of variables. Notably, tree planting is associated with somewhat worse outcomes.
@tdietzvt@psmaldino That is amazing to be present at the initial spark for such an important idea in science. How did it keep moving forward rather than sputtering like 99% of all other brainstorms?!!
@psmaldino@EnvPolicyCenter I was in the seminar where Pete and Rob met and began working on what they then called dual inheritance theory. The initial foray was in substantial part a reaction to the genetic reductionism of Wilson's sociobiology.

One of the more opaque parts of a faculty job (for outsiders) is how much of it is fundraising.
Grad student: $100K (stipend: $25K)
Post doc: $150K (salary: $75K)
Research staff: $220K (salary: $100K)
For a lab with 8 GS, 2 PDs, 2 staff, need to raise *at least* $1.5M per year.
