The claim that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) owned Bilal is historically and textually false. Bilal ibn Rabah was born into slavery in Makkah and was owned by Umayyah ibn Khalaf, one of the staunchest enemies of Islam. When Bilal embraced Islam, he was tortured severely by his master until Abu Bakr, at the Prophet’s urging, purchased his freedom. From that moment on, Bilal was a free man and one of the closest companions of the Prophet.

Far from treating Bilal as a servant, the Prophet elevated him to a position of honor. He entrusted him with the call to prayer, making him the first muezzin in Islam. His voice was the one that summoned believers to worship from the Kaaba itself after the conquest of Makkah. The Prophet himself bore witness to Bilal’s status in the Hereafter, telling him: “I heard your footsteps ahead of me in Paradise” (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). This was not a casual statement, it was an affirmation of Bilal’s faith, perseverance, and closeness to God.

On another occasion, when Bilal rose to give the Adhan, the Prophet praised him for his sincerity and devotion. The Prophet’s companions, too, revered Bilal, not as a former slave but as a symbol of dignity, sacrifice, and unwavering faith. In fact, early Islamic history remembers him as “Sayyid al-Mu’adhinin” the leader of all who give the call to prayer.

The idea that Islam demeaned Bilal or that the Prophet enslaved him is a distortion of history. The truth is the opposite: Islam shattered the chains that bound him and placed him on a pedestal of honor, so much so that his story is still retold in every corner of the Muslim world as an example of liberation, equality, and faith.

Sonko, allow me to clarify. When a Muslim sets out for Hajj or Umrah, he enters a sacred state called ihram. This isn’t just about clothing, it’s a spiritual condition.

For men, ihram means wearing two simple white sheets, leaving the head and face uncovered, avoiding perfume, shaving, or ordinary luxuries.

It symbolizes equality before God, no kings, no paupers, only pilgrims. For women, ihram is different; they wear normal modest dress, but avoid face veils and gloves.

Now, if a pilgrim dies while in this state, the Prophet Muhammad instructed clearly: ‘Wash him with water and lotus leaves, shroud him in his two garments, do not apply perfume, and do not cover his head or face, for he will be raised on the Day of Resurrection reciting the Talbiyah’

The Talbiyah means: ‘Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am — You have no partner — here I am. Truly all praise, blessings and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.’

So when you see a pilgrim buried with his face uncovered, that is not humiliation. It is actually one of the highest honors in our faith, to rise on Judgment Day still proclaiming the call of the pilgrim before Allah.

This is why it’s important not to misinterpret sacred rites as disrespect. What looks unusual is in fact a mark of spiritual dignity.
