The 3-finger trick saved me from a deepfake scammer.

It won't save you for long.

Here's why it worked:

Real-time deepfakes lock onto points on your face every frame. Eyes, nose, mouth, jaw. Then they paint the fake face on top.

Put fingers in front of the face and the tracker loses those points. The mask glitches, smears, or slips, and the real face leaks through.

So the scammer has 2 options: do it and get exposed, or freeze.

Mine froze.

Now the scary part.

Palo Alto's Unit 42 had a researcher with zero image-editing experience build a working real-time deepfake in 70 minutes. Free tools. 5-year-old computer.

That was last year.

Newer models are already getting better at handling hands over the face. Scammers watch the same viral tricks you do.

So don't rely on one trick. Stack them. Ask them to:

- wave a hand slowly across their face
- turn fully sideways
- tilt their ear to their shoulder
- flip a light on or off

Watch if the lips lag behind the audio.

Then verify the recruiter on the company's real site. Not the link they sent you.

But the real tell was never the face.

It was "run this repo before we talk."

No legit company needs code on your machine before a real conversation. If you ever have to run something, use a throwaway VM. No wallets. No SSH keys. No saved passwords.
