On Oct. 13 at 7pm, Prof. Aboubakar Sanogo will moderate an online panel that envisions what an anti-racist city might look like.

My latest:
I broke down 3 warning signs that the movement against systemic anti-racism is being derailed by those seeking only the appearance of change, rather than structural transformation.
There are more signs (including funding) but I started with 3:

"I know, as many do, that I’ve been living a pandemic all my life; it is structural rather than viral; it is the global state of emergency of antiblackness."
.@OLIP_PLIO and @EquityOttawa stand in solidarity with all who are affected by entrenched, systemic anti-Black, anti-Indigenous and other forms of racism. We are committed to collective action to address it. https://t.co/vEEG6vK1eN]
Some progress on better data. Ontario proposes reg changes so ppl who test positive for COVID-19 infection will be asked additional questions about race, income, languages, and household size. Individuals can choose not to answer and privacy is protected. https://t.co/AuWy1l30TA.
@ratnaomi immigration policy still has deeply embedded racist expressions in processes /systems; i.e. few visa posts in Africa; family reunification attached to an income level; agriculture workers must pay in to CPP EI but can never access @PolicyResponse
This moment is unprecedented, yet in many ways, we have been here before. Anti-Black racism is a #publichealth crisis that we must address NOW. Read the full statement from Black health leaders: https://t.co/5OPSVpIOGM #ONhealth#Blackhealth#BlackLivesMatter
Ottawa Public Health reports to Council that it is collecting race-based and income-based data and is working with diverse communities to examine the impact of COVID-19.
Great to hear FEDCO approve the recommendation to appoint Councillor @rawlsonking as Council Liaison for Anti-Racism and Ethnocultural Relations. We look forward to continuing to support the City's efforts to eliminate systemic racism and engage Ottawa's diverse communities.
I spoke to @ctvottawa this afternoon about anti-racism efforts in Ottawa, including the creation of the City's Anti-Racism Secretariat, in the wake of protests that have erupted across the U.S. over the death of George Floyd.
If you have Black friends or colleagues-- instead of going to them, asking how they are or expecting them to share information with you on how to be a good ally... learn to be good to them. Read this Medium post by @GoldingGirl617: https://t.co/bZyMbOVapu
Organization and community partners have been working together since then to create and implement an action plan for Ottawa to eliminate systemic and institutional anti-Black racism and other forms of racism. All are welcome to contribute to this effort. https://t.co/m1NXcn6yXv
Anti-Black racism is pervasive in #Ottawa. The "Addressing Anti-Black Racism in Ottawa" report that @ChelbyDaigle prepared in collaboration with @OLIP_PLIO and @CAWI_IVTF compiled evidence from 300 community members, some stats, and ways forward. https://t.co/ufSTVDWwpF

We know that anti-Black racism is embedded in our local institutions and shapes the daily reality of many Ottawa residents. We are committed to individual and collective action to eliminate it.

Re George Floyd and outrage over systemic racism: @WarrengClarke says the question is not whether this could happen in #Ottawa, but why it continues to happen. "There needs to be implementation of stronger policies and laws that combat anti-Black racism." https://t.co/5VlmHo5TzX
Today, the @ottawacity black leaders condemned the racist meme circulating in the @OttawaPolice and in the community. This racist meme was designed to derail the improvements in the area of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. @OPSChiefSloly@JimWatsonOttawa@Ottawa_CEC
Khulud points to @MeehanCarolAnne's idea for having people in parks to *educate* not *enforce* -- these should be people who are already part of the community, not bylaw or police officers. Educators, community leaders, librarians, and others can take up this #CommunityCare work.
