Portugal 2008. Group of death. Czech Republic, Turkey, Switzerland. He drags them out. Goal against Czech. Assist. Man of the Match. Group winners.

Then Quarter-Final. Germany. Ballack, Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Klose, Podolski, prime Germany.

Portugal? A 23-year-old boy. Deco tired. Simao lost. Nuno Gomes alone up front. And him.

They double him. Triple him. Lahm fouls him. Metzelder kicks him. Every time he gets the ball - three white shirts.

He still tries. He dribbles two. He shoots from 30 yards. He tracks back to defend. He crosses. No one there.

Germany wins 3-2. He walks off, shirt soaked, alone.

That same summer, he had just won Ballon d'Or. 42 goals for Man United. Champions League. Premier League. The best in the world.

And in that tournament, he learned the cruelest lesson of his career:

You can be the best player in the world, but you cannot beat 11 men alone.

Ronaldo had only hope in the national team.

2008 is not his failure. 2008 is the proof. Give him a team, he gives you trophies. Leave him alone, and he still tries to carry the whole country on his back.

Yeah… this is the lowest point this sport has ever been.

For the first time ever, players are literally self-campaigning for the Ballon d’Or like it’s some presidential election. They are talking down on each other, disrespecting clubs, and creating metrics by themselves. Neither Messi nor Ronaldo ever did this nonsense.

At this point, cancel the award for this year. Don’t give it to anyone. This is borderline shameful. None of these players pass the character requirements for the award.
