This is what the new government needed to face up to in today's budget.
This is the real headline and they avoided it.
Brexit is the black hole we need to close in the UK economy.
This is brilliant. If you want to understand energy policy, why electricity is so expensive, and how and why climate policies contribute to that, have a listen. Perhaps the clearest explanation I’ve ever heard.

🗣️Keeping talks going

Lady in yellow, "What about the economic damage of Brexit?" #BBCQT
Fiona Bruce, "More people are talking about Brexit at the moment I've noticed"
Sonia Sodha, "The last thing you do as a country is to put up massive trade barriers with your closest trading partners, Brexit was absolutely nuts"
"As a quick win, we should rejoin the EU Single Market and Customs Union"
"It is a no brainer for us, making us richer, and you and me better off"
"It's one of the reasons why we are poorer at the moment"
Extraordinary- Tories just tried to vote down statement on cooperating with Europe on defence and security including in Ukraine at the EU UK parliamentary partnership assembly. All because they don’t want to recognise how Brexit has made that more complicated..🫨 @labour4europe
Having watched that today, I can only say one thing:
Let’s all get behind @ZelenskyyUa 💯 ✊🏻
People whose countries haven’t recently experienced the trauma of invasion should not bully nor lecture those who have.
Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦
Five years since we left the EU and not one tangible benefit to have come from it.
Most telling of all is how it has diminished our ability to generate wealth and thus provide for our defence and public services in challenging times. Far from getting rid of red tape there were 41 million customs declarations to be made for trade between the U.K. and EU in 2023. Not surprisingly over 16,000 SMEs have given up exporting to Europe and our goods exports are rising at the paltry rate of 0.3% per annum compared to the OECD average of of 4.3%. Margaret Thatcher helped create the Single Market in goods and services because she could see clearly the boost it could give to our economy and it bore fruit. Until reality dawns for our politicians we are back to the 1960s-constant failing initiatives to boost growth, stagflation and impoverishment. We deserve better and it is within our power to get better. But that means abandoning the politics of fantasy.
