Auto-delete messaging isn't a case-ending mistake because of what it hides. It's a problem because of what it destroys, and courts are not sympathetic to "the app did it automatically."

Once litigation is reasonably anticipated, the preservation duty attaches, regardless of which app your team happens to be using that week. Signal threads, disappearing WhatsApp chats, Snapchat, all of it can trigger a spoliation claim if it wasn't paused or preserved in time. We've seen sanctions motions built on nothing more than a missing message thread and a bad-timed setting.

If your firm or your company hasn't addressed messaging apps in your litigation hold policy, that's worth fixing before it becomes an exhibit.
