America almost went to war with North Korea over a tree.

August 1976.
Korean Demilitarized Zone.

A poplar tree was blocking the view between two observation posts.

A small work party went out to trim it.
North Korean soldiers attacked them with axes and killed two American officers.

Three days later the United States answered.
Hundreds of troops.
Tanks.
Attack helicopters.
B-52 bombers circling overhead.

A full engineering team rolled into the DMZ in broad daylight and cut the entire tree down while the North Koreans watched in silence.

No shots were fired.
The message was received.

Most people have never heard how close the world came to war over a single poplar tree.
