Until last year, it never crossed my mind writing a paper out of my old BSc-thesis topic.
Now, here's the paper ๐: Comparing extension rates on 2 different timescales in the Eastern California shear zone. https://t.co/5QJsrhSbgN

@Hornegger@M_Hundhausen@UniFAU Schlossgarten 5!? Ist zwar bestimmt Denkmalgeschรผtzt, aber das Mansarddach mit Sรผdrichtung dรผrfte doch gut geeignet sein. Und ist nicht einsehbar vom Garten aus.
#MaunaLoa on #Hawaii is erupting for the 1st time since 1984. ๐ Hiking to the summit was the most surreal trek I ever did. And seeing no one else in two days, seemingly having this massive volcano to myself (+ a horrible headache over night at the crater due to the altitude ๐คช)
@ActiveFaults to me, the coloring appears to reflect Fe concentrations of initial deposited layers: in bottom left of second image, there seems to be horizontal bedding, which then becomes disturbed towards the right!?
A friend sent me these photos from #Petra#Jordan. Does anyone know anything about this? I.e. how the structure (and color variations) in the red layers formed? I'm curious, but not finding literature on it. ๐ง

Happy #ThinsectionThursday ๐โโ๏ธ what looks in the optical microscrope like rather ordinary, slightly dissolved / altered vein calcite crystals, turns out to be sick crystal growth in cathodoluminescence imagery!? ๐ง๐ฏ What the heck happened here? ๐ค(scale is in CL image)
In the #Karakoram, #Pakistan, there's a hiking trail trench through a glacial lateral moraine. Fairly crazy by itself. ๐ซฃ๐ชจ And then you see beautiful sets of deformation bands there. ๐ฅฐ
@Stef_EQ_Geology My guess is that these bands formed due to instability sliding/slumping of the moraine after glacial retreat. I've seen a number of moraine-parallel cracks in the glacier-facing moraine flank.
@geolsubho Yes, a hard hat is advisable (not really helpful for the big boulders though ๐คช). Yet also: if one worries too much about falling rocks, one wouldn't set foot into the Karakoram in the first place. And miss out on a stunning landscape. ๐คทโโ๏ธ๐
Finally, after 2-year covid-postponement, I was able to go for field work in NW Namibia again. ๐ฅณ Was great to be back. Geology and scenery as fantastic as ever. But temps >40ยฐC just brutal. ๐ Now waiting for my sample shipment. ๐ค
The NW of Namibia was extremely dry the last years, but is now seeing exceptional rainfalls. Water in rivers is reaching the sea for first time since 11 years. Sentinel imagery is spectacular (here the Hoanib floodplain). 1 month ahead of planned field work in the area.

Reviewing work I reviewed before for another journal (editor knows). Authors improved little of the concerns of all reviewers. Seems it's just submitted elsewhere hoping others to miss the issues. I find this extremely disrespectful towards the peers who spend their time with it.
