One of the biggest mistakes early clubs make:

Asking one person to be the operator, head coach, director of player development, scheduler, salesperson, and customer service department.

Early on, that may be necessary.

Long-term, organizational excellence needs owners of each.

Most youth sports organizations are built around teams.

I think they should be built around systems.

If I were starting an AAU, club, or school sports organization today, I’d obsess over two:

1. Athlete development
2. Organizational operations

The two systems are more connected than they seem.

Better operations create better experiences for coaches and families.

Better development creates better experiences for athletes.

And better experiences strengthen the entire organization.
