The Used, When We Were Young 2025 REVIEW: It’s been a quarter of a century since a band called The Used first started making its way out of Utah’s emo underbelly. And it is very fair to say that right here and right now, they have never sounded fiercer, fresher and more fantastically vital. Their main stage showing at When We Were Young continues their celebration of the first decade of their career, which has filled much of 2025, with the porcelain doll from their self-titled debut, the hung heart from ‘In Love And Death’ and the discomforting boxhead from ‘Lies For The Liars’ joining the band on stage. And looking back at these milestones, the quartet showcases not just how stitched into the fabric of the scene these songs are, but also how cutting-edge they still feel. ‘The Bird And The Worm’ sends shivers coursing up the spine, whilst ‘A Box Full Of Sharp Objects’ is accompanied by some of Bert McCracken's most throat-splitting of howls. On the other side of the coin, ‘I Caught Fire’ has never sounded more gorgeously tender and the raw emotion that has bolstered every singalong to ‘The Taste Of Ink’ over the last two decades feels at the most resolute it has ever been here. In taking back control of the feelings at the core of these warts-and-all anthems in the manner that they have, now using the pain that once was as a superpower to propel them into the unknown, it feels like there’s no stopping The Used.
