Today we celebrate #InternationalDayOfSignLanguages and honor the linguistic and cultural diversity of Deaf communities worldwide. 🌍 More than 300 sign languages are used globally — each one vital to inclusion and equal access.
🤟 Today, on #InternationalDayofSignLanguages, we celebrate the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Deaf communities worldwide.
⬇️ Here is our video featuring members of the Deaf community signing: “Changing the world for and by persons with disabilities.”
According to the @WFDeaf_org (WFD), an IDA member, there are more than 70 million Deaf people worldwide, with over 80% living in developing countries. Collectively, they use more than 300 different sign languages. Sign languages are fully fledged natural languages, distinct from spoken languages.
The #CRPD recognizes sign languages as equal to spoken languages and calls on governments to promote their use, preserve the linguistic identity of the Deaf community, and ensure early access to sign language education and services.
