Ernest Hemingway had a love-hate relationship with writing. He once told his editor:

"I have to write to be happy whether I get paid for it or not. But it is a hell of a disease to be born with. I like to do it. Which is even worse. That makes it from a disease into a vice.

"Then I want to do it better than anybody has ever done it which makes it into an obsession. An obsession is terrible. Hope you haven’t gotten any."

Hemingway even said he preferred rushing into battle over putting words to paper: "Every day and every night there is a strong possibility that you will get killed and not have to write."

And yet he wrote.

Takeaway: You don't have to love it. You don't have to be comfortable doing it. You just have to do it.

I think what’s hardest about being consistent with writing online is not necessarily finding the time.

There's more than enough time if you really want it.

It’s being able to justify that time to yourself and to other people—over and over again.

Why do you need 2 hours of quiet time in the morning to write? Why have you stopped drinking so you can wake up earlier to write? Why are you not going to the beach in the afternoon just so you can spend time alone on your computer? (What's happened to you?!)

Especially when you’re starting out, and you don't have much to show for all your hard work. Or when you don’t know yet how to explain to people (or even to yourself) what you’re trying to achieve with all of this...

It’s really hard to have that discipline and to deal with the feelings of uncertainty, guilt, and embarrassment.

You have to be strong to continue to say no to certain things so you can make space for writing.

Everyone talks about the "flow state" but no one has looked at the actual flow diagram. Advanced skill plus big challenges means flow. But to get there, you have to go past the relaxed state. Advanced skill plus small challenges means a lot of control...but no growth. Avoid this.
