The printing press didn't rely on stealing from millions of people & massive political harm to function. AI has been ~400% more environmentally destructive in 5 yrs than the printing press in 500 yrs. This argument is straw man false equivalency. Scale & overall benefit matter.
Ignore my Koji Fox attire (legendary man + a vocalist for the Primals), attended #kupocon#megapom and bought some autographs of XIV voice actors unable to guest at the convention! ๐ฅน Kupocon somehow making the already-14-guest-con even more insane!!!
Above performance, above directing, the most impactful part of your demo is not the sound effects, the music or even the writing.
Itโs how well you can actually recreate what it captured in a make or break professional setting.
Even if youโre not a competitive actor, if someone likes what they heard or even just likes who you are, if you canโt recreate and even elaborate on the performances they may reference in a demo, itโs going to hold you back.
This happens when your demos are over directed or over produced.
๐ฌ Over directing can look like:
- micromanaging performance
- hyper-specificity, โahh youโre almost thereโ (after 8 takes)
- โI need just a bit moreโ (after you gave it everything)
- line reads
- recording sessions taking several hours
- arbitrary pickup sessions
- you are asked to perform outside of your established skill set
- being hyped into multiple performances
๐ Over production (in this context) can look like:
- edits that depart from original performance
- scenes that arbitrarily depart from script (and therefore your directed performance)
- an under emphasis on pre production
๐ญ How to set yourself up for success:
- accept who you are and where you are in your journey *first
- proudly own when itโs your skill issue and donโt push it
- speak up if you feel your skills are being embellished or misrepresented
- remember; skill is what you can do in 1-3 takes. Ambition is everything after that
Demos demonstrate what you have, not what you are aiming for. Ask a professional actor or non-indie director to tell you how a standard-recording session goes in a network commercial, animation, or AAA game
Thereโs no hand holding, very little context, no time to practice reads, no rewriting scenes for your taste
Give professionals a reason to trust you and bridge any gap before you publish a demo
Anyway, social media is a powerful tool where survivors & victims of abuse can communicate with others for support & healing. Removing access to full block functionality puts people at very serious risk & doesn't allow for boundaries they've set to remain intact.
One way you can celebrate Indigenous People's Day is to watch movies! I compiled a list of Native/Indigenous films, documentaries, and shorts telling, teaching, and celebrating our history, stories, and life. So far I have 124 films and will continue to add more.
