You folks are fundamentally misunderstanding the situation. Atatürk did not save us from a Sykes-Picot style western occupation and colonization. No, Atatürk saved us from the repetition of the ethnic cleansing and genocide inflicted upon the Turks in the Balkans following the Balkan Wars.

The allied powers clearly and with the exception of Italy unilaterally wanted the total annihilation of the "sick man". Not just the state of the Ottomans, but the Turkish people as a whole. This was a policy they followed for centuries and the only reason they did not always follow through with it was because of their infighting and the fear of upsetting the balance of power.

So yeah, to us he isnt just an anti-imperalist, anti-colonialist, pro-sovereignity freedom fighter or a "third world modernizing nationalist leader" like Sun Yat-Sen or Mao Zedong. For us is the man who basically single handedly organized a resistance, gathered an army saved us, the Turks, from the total extermination policy pursued by the west for centuries. He stopped the centuries of humiliation and calamity of the Turkish people, and raised the destitute and exhausted Turkish people and backwater lands of Anatolia into a modern nation state.

Thats why he is regarded as the father of our nation and that is exactly why the Turkish people have given him the name Atatürk. Everything we have, everything we are able to be and our very own existance are all thanks to him

So the soldiers kept suitable positions, high ground for negotiation power and safety. It makes sense, considering 🇦🇲 occupied 1/4th of 🇦🇿 for years.
