Le 22 février 2024, pendant le retrait des forces ukrainiennes d'Avdiïvka, la sniper Kateryna Shynkarenko, surnommée « Whisky », est restée sur sa position pour couvrir le repli de ses camarades. Elle a combattu jusqu'au bout entre Lastotchkyné et Sieverné. Elle avait 30 ans.

Née à Kramatorsk le 26 janvier 1994, Kateryna était coiffeuse de métier. Elle était aussi championne de lutte de la région de Donetsk. Mais ceux qui la connaissaient savaient surtout à quel point elle aimait le vélo.

Faire 200 ou 300 kilomètres dans la journée ne lui faisait pas peur. Elle s'était même lancé des défis de 600 puis de 1 000 kilomètres, ce qui lui avait permis d'obtenir le titre de super-randonneuse. Son rêve était de participer à la célèbre épreuve Paris Brest Paris.

Quand la Russie a lancé son invasion à grande échelle en 2022, sa famille a dû quitter Kramatorsk pour s'installer à Ostroh. C'est là qu'elle a fait le choix de rejoindre les Forces armées ukrainiennes. Elle est devenue tireuse d'élite au sein de la 53e brigade mécanisée.

Après sa mort, son corps est resté plusieurs mois en territoire temporairement occupé avant d'être récupéré et identifié. Le 16 avril 2024, Ostroh lui a rendu un dernier hommage.

Elle laisse un mari et un petit garçon de 7 ans, à qui elle avait appris à faire du vélo.

On parle souvent des chiffres de cette guerre. Derrière chacun d'eux, il y a une histoire comme celle de Kateryna.

Respect éternel à sa mémoire.
