This, plus make it a true “world cup” by having the group stages in whatever part of the world the teams are from. Groups of African teams playing in Africa, Asian teams playing in Asia, the group winners go to the hos country for the round of 32 or 16 even.
The World Cup has been great so far, and FIFA is selling a lot of tickets. The cynicism about a 48-team format wasn't really warranted.
However, it does create some awkwardness, with group-stage games being low-stakes and a weird bracket. The solution? Expand to 64.
