Masoud Pezeshkian may be the only Iranian president to have lived several political lifetimes in a single term.
He took office after a president died in a helicopter crash. His inauguration was followed by the killing of a guest of that ceremony, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Iran then attacked Israel directly. Hezbollah leader was then assassinated by Israel. Bashar al-Assad fell. War reached Iran. A few months later, protests erupted. Then another war that saw the leadership changing under fire. A new leader was chosen while the country was still at war.
And now, the same president who entered office amid funerals and missiles is signing a peace deal with an American president.
Under Pezeshkian, Iran hasn’t stopped moving from one phase to another.
‘Iran is a bigger defeat than Vietnam,’ Foreign Policy analyst writes
——
Writing for Foreign Policy, analyst Paul Musgrave argues that the US defeat in the recent war against Iran represents a "strategic calamity" far surpassing the failure in Vietnam.
While the Vietnam War resulted in significantly higher US casualties, nearly 60,000 compared to fewer than 20 in the war on Iran, Musgrave contends that the long-term geopolitical consequences of the latter are much more severe.
He observes that while Vietnam was a cultural "stain," it ultimately had little impact on broader US strategic goals, whereas the current defeat has left the US in a fundamentally "weaker position" with its core strategic objectives harmed.
Despite the technical superiority of US weapons, the war exposed a "shallowness of US arsenals" and the limitations of kinetic solutions. Musgrave notes that rather than installing a "pliable client" in Tehran, the war strengthened the hard-line elements of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Furthermore, Iranian forces demonstrated the ability to penetrate US defensive systems, while the "lasting image" of US high-tech combat remains the blood-spattered schoolbags of Iranian girls killed in the Minab school massacre.
A critical difference identified by Musgrave is the inability of the US to simply exit the region as it did in Southeast Asia. The global economy is now inextricably linked to the Gulf’s supply chains for hydrocarbons, helium, fertilizer, and aluminum.
Musgrave emphasizes that the potential weaponization of the Strait of Hormuz poses "grievous harm to world commerce" and marks the failure of a core US objective, freedom of navigation, that has stood for over two centuries.
Ultimately, he concludes that this "war of choice" has eroded US leadership, leaving allies with less confidence and rivals more likely to challenge Washington’s authority.
I've spent my career warning against regime change wars, nation-building, and endless military entanglements. The same voices now attacking Trump's Iran deal are the architects of every failed intervention of my lifetime.
This war must end. I stand with President Trump on peace.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that Tehran would refrain from taking any further steps under the Iran-US memorandum of understanding if Washington fails to uphold its commitments.
"If America does not fulfill its commitments, we will not take any steps either," Ghalibaf said in remarks carried by Iranian media.
The speaker stressed that the memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington is founded on the principle of "step for step," indicating that each side's implementation of the agreement is contingent upon reciprocal action by the other.
Overnight, Iran and the US signed the deal digitally in both English and Persian, officially placing the MoU into effect. The full text of the understanding was published by Tasnim news agency.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, speaking after a meeting with members of the parliament’s Economic Commission:
• "A meeting between the heads of the Iranian and US negotiating delegations is likely to take place in Switzerland on Friday, where a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US could be signed, followed by the first round of subsequent negotiations."
• "The agreement could create economic opportunities for Iran, but the country's economy should not become dependent on or tied to such arrangements reached through negotiations with the US."
• "We have experienced breaches of commitments, failures in implementation, and even the abandonment of agreements in the past. Therefore, we are planning both the negotiation process and implementation of any agreement on the basis of mistrust shaped by those previous experiences."
• "We will seek to maximize the economic benefits that can be achieved through an agreement. In foreign policy, we do not miss opportunities, but neither do we place our hopes entirely in any single opportunity."

Latin American countries stay poor because they want to, really. They elect a US-backed kleptocrat every other election cycle, and then are surprised that their country gets completely robbed; it's how they do politics. This really makes the US a Latin American country now, too.

So if I’m understanding this correctly, Israel and the US only planned for 4 days of war. We are on day 2 and the regime still hasn’t collapsed, every ally has been bombed, and the IRGC is operating in an autonomous decentralized manner in a fight to the death doctrine.
Several major oil companies and trading houses have suspended oil and fuel shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, as a result of this morning’s exchange of fire between Israel, Iran, and the United States, according to four trading sources who spoke to Reuters.
The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has announced the beginning of Operation True Promise 4 is underway against the U.S. and Israel following the attack this morning.
