40 years ago, Canada faced the deadliest terrorist attack in its history.

Today, we mourn the 268 Canadian victims of the Air India bombing and all who have been killed in acts of terrorism — a sombre reminder of our commitment to fight violent extremism and keep Canadians safe.

40 years ago today, 331 innocent lives — including 268 Canadians and 137 under the age of 18 — were lost in the bombing of Kanishka - Air India Flight 182, the deadliest terrorist attack in Canadian history. On the National Day for Victims of Terrorism, we remember them and stand with their families.

We must do more than remember. I support calls to establish the Kanishka Learning & Memorial Centre and have urged every BC political leader to back this important initiative.

The Air India massacre must also have a prominent place in BC’s curriculum. Students deserve to learn the truth about the radical Khalistani extremists responsible, and how we safeguard our communities against violent extremism.

It will be my solemn honour to speak at tonight’s 40th anniversary commemoration.
