The Esser-Kahn lab proudly minted two new Ph.D.s this week! Adam Weiss (Ph.D. @UChiChemistry) is headed to the Center for Translational Medicine at University of Montana. Liza Mulder (Ph.D. @UChiPhysics) is continuing her work in the EK Lab as a postdoc. We are so proud of you!
In a new contract with @NIAIDNews, @UChicago's Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME) professor Aaron Esser-Kahn and his team of researchers aim to create a flu vaccine that has fewer side effects, making it safer for vulnerable populations.

Aaron Esser-Kahn, @FergLab and a team of researchers at @UChicago's Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering developed a potential first for the field of #vaccine design.

We used artificial intelligence methods to guide a search of a huge chemical space," said Prof. Aaron Esser-Kahn,
"In doing so, we found molecules with record-level performance that no human would have suggested we try. We're excited to share the blueprint for this process."
In a potential first for the field of vaccine design, machine learning guided the discovery of new immune pathway-enhancing molecules and found one particular small molecule that could outperform the best immunomodulators on the market.

Powerful approach using AI in drug screening, https://t.co/XJOOMQEVQ5 Congratulations to Esser-Kahn lab @EsserKahnLab , and nice to see our CSC HTS shop in the pictures
Some nice work by @HojinKim_ on shear jamming piezoelectric particle suspensions. Some cool fundamental insights and using the jamming process to induce chemistry. Congrats! In collaboration with Heinrich Jaegar and @EsserKahnLab . @UChiMaterials@UChicagoPME@UChicagoPSD

When PME researchers added small molecules called immunomodulators to vaccines, they found the combined therapy could both increase antibodies and reduce inflammation, potentially leading to better vaccines with fewer side effects.
