After nearly two crazy years at The Sunday Times with the most wonderful colleagues, I'm leaving to start my own venture. Please subscribe to The Examiner and follow along to continue reading my reporting on Sri Lanka.
1)Solidarity and support shown to @kumanan93 is heartening. But when supporting ppl experiencing protection issues, there are principles to which you must adhere. Most imp is ‘do no harm’-every action should help and not harm person. Always ask if it is in person’s best interest
5/Security agencies are de facto criminalizing legitimate, constitutionally protected activities and wasting scarce state resources to ethnically profile and harass a community - appears Tamils are by default considered suspicious and potentially engaging in illegal activities.
1/Terrorism Investigation Div summoning @kumanan93 is latest in harassment and intimidation spanning many yrs. TID/CID and military intelligence call him often demanding info and over the yrs have warned/threatened him, summoned him for inquiry, visited his home and followed him.
I want to thank everyone for their support and solidarity this time.
Before this government came to power, my only hope was that they would repeal the PTA so we could work without fear of it. But now, nearly 10 months into their rule, that hope remains unfulfilled. Compared to the previous government, I feel this one is somewhat better yet my only wish is that they will not harass anyone under the PTA.
For decades, CTID summons have been used as a tool of intimidation against Tamil journalists .
We talk about Tamil rights, truth, justice, and accountability and we work on these issues.
However, receiving this CTID summons is deeply worrying for me. I wish to live and work freely in my Country without fear.

Sri Lanka's Counter Terrorism & Investigation Division (CTID) has summoned leading Tamil journalist & rights defender, Kanapathipillai Kumanan, informing him to appear at CTID Sub-station in Alampil, Mullaithivu on August 17th for an 'inquiry'. @RSF_inter@CPJAsia@ifjasiapacific
Dr. de Mel referred to the increased budgetary allocation under the defence expenditure procurement category Diets and Uniforms which rose from Rs. 70.7Bn in 2023 to Rs. 101Bn in 2024 and Rs. 135Bn in 2025, reflecting a 33 percent annual increase this year https://t.co/QZ1ykx0cRJ
absolutely momentous that there are now two Malaiyaha Tamil women, Krishnan Kaleychelvi (Nuwara Eliya) & Ambika Samuel (Badulla), elected to parliament. Really hope that they are supported, nurtured & offered every opportunity as representatives of the Malaiyaha Tamil community✊🏽
Here is my initial response given to @TheMorningLK in reaction to the reported comments by Minister Vijitha Herath on the NPP's stance on the long overdue reforms of the MMDA.
(1/2) Things that can be done:
1. A moratorium can be declared by the government on the PTA, and communicated via Min Public Security to the police and security forces.
2. The commitment to REPEAL the PTA and other laws with broad unchecked policing powers can be restated.

3) Many cases, incl evidence in report of HRCSL’s prison study show that it was used against Tamils and later Muslims who were not civic activists or journalists. So it wasn’t about “revenge”, but about ethno-religious profiling driven by deep rooted systemic discrimination.
#PTA
1)The NPP govt’s justification for retaining #PTA is that the problem is not with the law but its “misuse”. They say “issue was about the misuse of the PTA against civil activists and journalists”, which they say they won’t allow. https://t.co/lWJl7aC3oI
"The issue was about the misuse of the PTA against civil activists and journalists".
No, the more fundamental issue is that the PTA continues to be the State's tool to oppress minorities and repress movements for truth + justice + liberation.
It is used exactly as was intended.
Join us in Colombo for the launch of our publications, followed by a panel discussion on documentation and memory, justice, and human rights in Sri Lanka's North-East - particularly in the context of shifting political landscapes and leadership.

1) It feels like Yahapalana 2.0 and I have a sense of deja vu as I watch what is unfolding after the presidential election. I want the Prez to succeed and NPP should get a parliamentary majority because if they don’t, a coalition govt
Btw, the SL nuclear family he idealizes is one where women are subject to violence and children are abused as police statistics, research and media reports show. What we want is for more people to challenges the inequities women face within such families, not justify them.
