Out now! Featuring a chapter by me on archiving extreme material, and also some great contributions by others. Reading the other contributions has certainly made me think about my ethical practice (and reassured me about others!)
Published today!
'At last! A straight-on discussion of ethical quagmires in studies of the far-right, and a guide to navigating issues of political impact, safety, terminology, and more. A must-read for scholars and students.'

It's out! 🔥🔥🔥
Really pleased to have been able to wokr on the project and see how it's turned out!
If you haven't yet, please ask your library to order a copy
A paperback will be out next year hopefully and far more affordable
Super excited to have a cheeky wee chapter in this fantastic looking book.
@michaelczeller, Michael Vaughan and I critically examine the role of the scholar in policymaking, and if we can support responses to the far right without being implicit in racialised counterterrorism.
A brilliant new book on the ethics of researching of the far-right is dropping next month 🔥
I was lucky enough to contribute a chapter on race, racism and the far-right
Great to see this coming out. A much needed critical reflection on/ intervention into the ethics of researching the far right: one that centres an analysis of power & racism. Congrats & thanks to the eds @antoniacvaughan @JoanBraune @meghanetinsley & @aurelmondon@ManchesterUP

Overall, in this book we are contributing a broad provocation and series of starting points which we hope will be built on.
The book is very expensive at the moment unfortunately, but we will look at sharing chapters and it will come out in paperback in a year

The sixth and final section of the book, “Activism and Dissemination”, turns outward as it reflects critically on the ideal relationship between research and activism.
@mcneilwillson, @michaelczeller, @AnnaMeierPS, @aurelmondon, @Katy_Brown4

There are a number of absences in this book which speak to the need for more research on the ethics of researching the far right. The themes of the book are far from exhaustive, exemplified by the events and publications produced since the project was initiated.
9/
The fifth section, “Know Your Enemy: Ethical Considerations for Participant Engagement,” concerns the difficult dance involved in research on (former) far-right participants: a dance between the seemingly opposed poles of connection and distance
@JoanBraune, @ProfJohnDrury
7/
In the third section, "Memory and far right studies", contributors consider how collective memory and heritage are appropriated and mobilised by the far right in order to project their ideologies across history.
@D_FarrellBanks, @meghanetinsley, @Narson, @jean23bean
5/
The fourth section, "Safety and Care" centres considerations of harm, risk, and the ethics of care when researching a topic that is inherently harmful.
@KaylaPreston4, @antoniacvaughan, @caliguLAD_
6/
The second section, "Positionality, standpoint and intersectionality", focuses on how the positionality and standpoint of researchers can impact not only on the field, but on wider society.
@LubardaB, @cat_tebaldi, @vbanthr, @EBMeuller, @aaronzwinter

Section 1, “What’s in a Name?”, engages with key terminological debates which have been core to the discipline for decades, but seeks to push traditional discussions further by weighing the impact of our choice of words
@Kurt_Sengul, @georgenewth, @mirandaioss

Core to our project and as our intro states:
'it is crucial to undertake research on the far right in defence of and in solidarity with those targeted and harmed by these ideologies, while also acknowledging the threat posed to broader democratic principles'.
