One of the blind spots I see in many SBC pastors and denominational leaders is a violation of Romans 12:10:
“Outdo each other in showing honor”
Now wait— I already feel it comin… “honor doesn’t take the place of Biblical fidently, we need to defend the truth of the Scriptures at all costs!!” I hear ya. But, not at the expense of violating Scripture. If you have to hop over Romans 12:10 to make your point, you’ve done so in sin. 1 Peter 3:15 calls for respect in the convo.
If you have to dishonor image bearers… with whom Christ died for… in order to make your point— you’ve violated the great commandment (Matt. 22:39), as well as the command to “honor everyone” (1Peter 2:17)— including those you disagree with.
It’s wild to me the dishonor I’ve received since posting my convictions regarding the SBC amendment. I’ve been called a retard, stupid, leftist, weak, coward, heretical, effeminate lol and more. These comments aren’t the fruit of the Spirit, but the flesh. And I sense these are comments from people inside my own tribe.
Yet, not only that… I beleive we are still called to honor fellow believers who disagree with our statement of faith. In fact, I have several friends outside of the SBC who disagree with my complimentarian view. We agree on the gospel and the mission to reach lost people, but we disagree on women’s role in ministry. We have good theological and ecclesiological discussions, but arrive at different conclusions. I don’t see it how they see it. They don’t see it how I see it. And we still love each other and press on in the gospel and choose to honor each other.
The way so many in my tribe have handled the women in ministry topic in my view is sin.
I’m fine with having a study theological conviction, and defending it, but tearing people down who see it differently and name calling misses the mark. You’ll never reach people with different views through dishonor.
However, honor could build a bridge to actually share your view in a way where someone may hear you. Honor builds trust and Kingdom relationships.
I pray we repent of allowing the desires of the flesh (Gal. 5:19-20) to dominate our decisions, defense of convictions, and our hearts.

At 46 I think I've officially reached the age where I have to be careful that my sermon illustrations are demographically relevant. I told a story on Sunday that referenced the Watergate scandal of the 70s. There were more than a few blank stares from the room 😅
And the front row was full of middle schoolers, for whom I am the equivalent age of a prehistoric dinosaur. Need to brush up on my pop culture apparently 😬
@anatelorenzen Looks nice!
One thought: the “before” images are easy to read from a phone screen, the new ones are not — fonts are small and they are busier overall.
Just a thought, take it or leave it!
