New York City is looking more like Mars. Haze from Canadian wildfires is blanketing parts of the Midwest and Northeast, turning skies orange as smoke particles scatter sunlight and reduce visibility. On Mars, that rusty color comes from iron-rich dust and rock across the planet’s surface.
Wow!! Thursday is going to be very ugly for places like Buffalo, Erie, Syracuse, New York City, Philadelphia, all of New Jersey and many other locations where the smoke will be thick enough to cut with a knife. HRRR hourly "Near Surface Smoke" product through Thursday 15z.
Thursday's Weather Rating: 1/10
Diabolical. Dense wildfire smoke is in place this morning, and will remain here all day long resulting in low visibility and terrible air quality. High temperatures reach into the mid 90s later, too. The vibes have vacated the area.
Canadian wildfire smoke continues to thicken over the area into tonight, likely lingering into the end of the week. Expect both near-surface air quality and visibility to worsen this afternoon. This satellite loop shows both smoke (gray/brown) and clouds (white) in the region.
Parts of the Northeast US have been under a thick plume of smoke today overspreading the region from fires across south-central Canada - the worst smoke plume to affect the region since the infamous 2023 NYC smoke plume.
Thread for the meteorology associated with this:
Folks – remember in 2023 when parts of the Northeast saw the skies turn orange? That may happen again.
It may be time to break out the N95 masks – you don't want to breathe in all these microscopic aerosols and particulates.
An upper-echelon wildfire outbreak is happening in southern Ontario. Low pressure swirled a cold front through southeast Canada on Tuesday, and all that smoke is pouring southeast behind the front – spilling into the Lower 48.
There's no immediate end in sight to the fires, and, with prolonged northwesterly flow, we're expecting continued smoke buildup.
That will make for eerie-orange sunrises and sunsets. Some folks will see fully-white skies as a veil of thick smoke blots out the blue. Others will be shrouded by fully-orange skies.
At the surface, it will smell like a campfire for days. In many cases, fine particulate matter will be hazardous to ALL groups. If you can smell smoke, we recommend minimizing time outdoors.
Smell smoke this morning? Its coming from a wildfire outbreak in Ontario. While it should not impact air quality much today, smoke at the surface could increase Wednesday into Thursday, potentially reducing visibilities and air quality. High temperatures may also be limited.
A string of wildfires that has erupted across Northern Minnesota and Southern Ontario is going to be a major player in our air quality here over the next few days...
On Sunday morning, I suffered a sudden heart attack at the ripe age of 36. I was extremely fortunate to be in the hands of good friends, family and amazing doctors that very literally saved my life. It will be a few days before i’m back in action.
