Im surprised nobody ever mentions this, but the main reason the PS2 sold as well as it did was cause it also functioned as a DVD player, so its extra brain dead that Sony is killing physical media
Ok, we give up now, right?
Seriously, though, don't let a bit of corpo speak during an earnings call keep you from fighting for your rights and for what you love! Sony was never going to just cave after a few weeks of backlash. But they do see us! This is only the beginning!
I used to work in data.
THIS is how data gets manipulated
-Over 60% of sales were PC (NO physical choice)
-ANY Game Key Cards get counted by publishers as digital
-Digital only Monster Hunter game sold 18m units which skews further
Do NOT believe Sony's LIES
Sony wants to abandon fans? Let's give them a small taste of their own medicine!
Together with other creators we call for a 1 week #PSBlackout in August. No logins, no play sessions, no purchases on any of Sony's platforms.
God of War Laufey was announced like a month ago. There's no way they suddenly know the release date but didn't know it back when first announced. This is 100% a Sony decision telling Santa Monica to announce the date ASAP as a deflection tactic during the physical/digital drama.
In a sane world, automation would pave the way for true abundance and even a post-scarcity society, where humanity could truly flourish.
But in our world, all it does is create unemployment, widen the wealth gap, and pave the way for a police-state.
My brother who hasn’t turned on his PS3 or used PSN in over 10 years decided to boot up his ps3 to play something that is currently DOWNLOADED on the console.
Licenses are expired and his PSN account is deleted. So games are gone forever
WOOOOO!!!!!
The fact that the community was able to emulate these games so fast after Sony pissing everyone off means we could have done this at any time.
We didn't because pirates have an unspoken code of honour and will mor eoften than not respect IP holders. Sony did this to themselves.
Guess who owns Crunchyroll.
Remember what happened to a lot of digital content during the Crunchyroll-Funimation merger?
Also, how would all of you feel, if you had to pay 14 bucks a month to even access the PlayStation store?
Still convinced that we should go with the times?
“50 million people subscribe to PS+. Let's say 500,000 cancel in protest, that would be just 1% of that business gone.”
And? does that JUST mean a 1% loss of revenue? No of course not. Losing 1% of your total ecosystem is HORRIBLE. Remember, its not just PSN subs, its people dropping out of the PS+ exclusive discounts and deals that would drive even more sales.
While we are here, Since 2020, Here is where Sony Ended each year in PS+ Subs
2020: 47.6 million
2021: 47.4 million
2022: 47.4 million
Notice how it stagnated? but what about 2023 and beyond? Well! that's when PlayStation decided that Active PS+ Subs is a silly stat to show investors and decided to ONLY track "Monthly Active Users"! Which only requires someone with a FREE PSN to turn on and play their console! Which also includes free to play players for third party games (Fortnite, Warzone, etc) which technically, doesn't earn Sony a single solitary dollar unless they buy MTX.
Oh, and 2023 is when they introduced the REALLY expensive system (Essential, Extra, Premium) along with their price hikes. So we can only assume that 47.4 million number has, most likely, gone DOWN.
When the live service this big stagnates, a 1% drop in all cases is a REAL bad thing.
Again, stocks, income, employment, etc. at the scale of Playstation? 1% is ALOT. That now means they have to not only get out of being stagnant, they also have to CATCH UP. That loss of income in a sector that they are currently investing as their ONLY future is not a good look.
But hey; since we're on the topic of "1%" being an insignificant amount; lets draw a comparison. "Microsoft laid off 4,800 people! That's horrible! Burn them at the stake!"
...did you know, that was ONLY 2.1% of their total work force?
But according to these analysts, that's an insignificant number! (To be clear, this has been doused in sarcasm)
a 1% loss to the playstation ecosystem being treated as "almost nothing" on their scale has me dumbfounded as a point for an argument and seems really out of touch.
This is some of the most disgustingly arrogant things I’ve ever read and it makes my blood boil.
Because they believe their fans are loyal, they can abuse them however they want and they’ll come back for more.
Their gamers are not to be valued, they are seen as suckers to scam.
Listen up, this is important.
We lost the fight against microtransactions.
We lost the fight against day one patches.
We lost so much of what games used to be.
But we CANNOT lose this fight.
Drop PlayStation IMMEDIATELY. Don’t support this terrible decision.
Scorched Earth.
Just to be clear. Sony wasn't LOSING money on physical. They just weren't making as much profit as they did on a digital sale.
They are about to find out that the decision to kill physical was a very expensive mistake.
You’re telling me Sony made this extremely game changing business decision to stop making discs for games, and they didn’t have the foresight to let their business partners and retailers know before hand????
Now Im positive they did this shit off a whim because of GTA6 not having a physical release
